I think it is funny how quickly the relativism of life can cause me to lose patience or expect more than I am getting. On Thursday I will fly home to Utah. I will leave at 9 AM Eastern Time and arrive at 6 PM Eastern Time. If I am delayed more than an hour or two I will likely get a little frustrated.
Rewind 160 years, the pioneers enter the Salt Lake Valley after traveling across the plains for months and months. Family members died, disease tore through wagon trains, they walked every step of the journey. I will sit back in a comfy chair, watch TED talks on my iPod, read a book, sleep for a bit, and arrive before I even need to eat a full meal again. What right do I have to complain at all?
I have to drive 20 minutes to get to church. I get frustrated when some people need rides over and over again to activities because it takes me 35 minutes to get to church. Hmmm, could it be worse? Perhaps, take away the car, the nice weather, the good shoes to walk in, the warm home I am leaving, and the distance I have to travel. How dare I complain?
Kinda weird isn't it? If I could only keep a small portion of my thoughts centered on living conditions 150 years ago...I could be the most content, happy man alive.

Yeah, I went through the same thing the first few years I flew in between NY and UT for school. I have to say, it's a lot harder to keep that perspective in mind when you take red eyes, which is about all I ever took. After flying to UT for Christmas though, I give up. Traveling is just no fun, especially when you have any excuse not to feel good. At least while I'm pregnant, I've decided that rather than feeling sorry for the pioneers and content about my own situation, I've decided to settle for still feeling sorry for me, but just even more sorry for the pioneers. How's that for relativism?
Vickie, so true. As much as we want to avoid it, stuff like that is still frustrating. I guess it is because, although it took them a long time to get across the country, they didn't have daily/weekly deadlines to meet, they didn't live life at a pace that we are required to today just to provide for ourselves. I guess my view was a bit simplistic :)
don't get shot. Grandpa
Please tell Vickie I am on pins and needles r/t their baby.
Wowie she will be a great mother!!!
